Six: Python 2 and 3 Compatibility Library

Six provides simple utilities for wrapping over differences between Python 2 and Python 3. It is intended to support codebases that work on both Python 2 and 3 without modification. six consists of only one Python file, so it is painless to copy into a project.
Six can be downloaded on PyPi. Its bug tracker and code hosting is on BitBucket.
The name, “six”, comes from the fact that 2*3 equals 6. Why not addition? Multiplication is more powerful, and, anyway, “five” has already been snatched away by the (admittedly now moribund) Zope Five project.

Six Point Foundation makes grants to provide Holocaust survivors and refugees of Jewish origin, who are resident in the UK and who face difficult financial circumstances, with extra support so that they can live a better life.

Six Arms

So where are the six-fisted drinkers?
photo
The oddly named Six Arms is not so oddly named when you consider our beer-label logo showing a Hindu idol with her six, sinuous arms aloft. Inside the bustling pub, enormous windows and an impressive three-dimensional sculpture of our multi-armed mascot make Six Arms a destination for Seattle's funky Capitol Hill neighborhood.
Filled with a long wooden bar, booths, an upstairs section with wrought-iron café tables and mini booth, the pub also boasts McMenamins' largest collection of chandeliers. Pretty, aren't they?
Nestled on Pike Street halfway between Capitol Hill and downtown shopping, the airy pub features daily specials, a menu of classic pub fare and handcrafted ales brewed right on site.
Six Arms allows leashed pets outside on the patio areas.

Six takeaways from Jeffrey Lurie news conference

Dan Christian hammers six on to Gabba roof against Brisbane Heat

he Hurricanes were going along at a solid, if unspectacular pace when Christian, who was discarded by the Heat after last season before being born again in Hurricanes colours, came to the crease with seven overs remaining in Tuesday night's Big Bash League clash.
The all-rounder was a respectable 17 off 12 when Mark Steketee came on to bowl the 18th over and Christian set off on a run-plundering crusade as he smacked 15 runs in four balls, but worse was still to come for Brisbane.
Luke Feldman had the arduous task of bowling the penultimate over to a rampaging Christian and, when the second ball of the over landed in the slot, the all-rounder swung hard and true, firing the ball over long-on.

Kenya: Six military officers killed in spate of attacks

Six security personnel have been killed in the past two weeks in attacks across the country. A Kenya Defence Forces soldier was killed in an ambush in El-Wak in Mandera County on December 13. The rest are police officers who were killed in separate ambushes, most of them by Al Shabaab militia. At least five other officers are admitted to various hospitals following the attacks that happened during the Christmas period. The first victim was an officer who was among two people killed when the militants attacked a bus in Kutulo.

Research Interests

Dr. Six received his PhD in Soil Science in 1998 from Colorado State University. His PhD research was conducted at the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory (NREL). His research focused on the mechanisms underlying greenhouse gas mitigation by no-tillage practices. Dr. Six remained as a Research Scientist at NREL from 1998 until 2002. He led and was involved in many projects investigating the effect of land use change and management on greenhouse gas fluxes in agricultural, grassland and forest ecosystems. At UCDavis, Dr. Six has further developed this line of research with a focus on the feedbacks between ecosystem management options (e.g., tillage, cover cropping, green manuring, sustainable farming, and grazing), global change (e.g., elevated CO2 and climate change), and biogeochemical cycling. More specifically, he studies the complex interactions between soil (e.g, structure, texture and mineralogy), plants (e.g., diversity, nutrient uptake, and root growth), soil biota (e.g. fungi, bacteria, and earthworms), and the carbon and nitrogen cycles in terrestrial ecosystems, especially agroecosystems. His general approach is to conduct experimental work from the micro- to landscape scale and subsequently integrate it with modeling to interpolate and extrapolate it to the regional and global scale. The modeling has also as goals to identify gaps in our knowledge, generate testable hypotheses, and test the mechanistic bases of the models. Furthermore, bio-economic modeling is conducted in collaboration with economic and social scientist to holistically assess the sustainability of agriculture. His project sites span from small growers’ fields to intensively-farmed production systems to agricultural research stations. We are involved in a suite of international research projects in Africa, Europe, the US, and Central and South America.
He recently took up a chair position in Sustainable Agroecosystems at ETH-zurich, where he will continue his research program developed at UCDavis, but with more of an emphasis on landscape analyses and global Food Security.
Dr. Six is a Chancellor’s Fellow of the University of California – Davis and a Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science.

New York nanny charged with assaulting six-month-old girl after parents left secret cameras around the apartment to catch her

A babysitter has been charged with abusing a six-month-old girl after she was allegedly caught on surveillance cameras when the parents were out.
Elena Bass, 36, was seen 'violently removing' the child from a changing table and slamming her into an armchair in the family's Brooklyn home shortly before Christmas, according to legal documents.
The girl's parents contacted police on Monday after watching the footage, the New York Daily News reported.

Six new homes with craftsmanship of old go up in Church Hill

Bryan Traylor is back in his old stomping grounds of Church Hill and building houses, not just one house at a time.
Nor is Traylor, owner of Unlimited Renovations, building what he can afford to build and sell. He is building what he wants to build.
“I am basically building history,” Traylor, 42, said. “I want to be able to drive by in 30 or 40 years and look at the detail.”
Traylor has six houses under construction and one renovation, all within a two-block area of one another on North 30th and North 31st streets.
“This the first time in Church Hill where we have had so many specs in one small area of the neighborhood north of Broad Street all over $400,000,” said Matt Jarreau, the listing agent with Hometown Realty.
The Richmond builder is taking his cues from the old housing stock here and blending craftsmanship with modern designs, materials, open floor plans and energy efficiencies of new construction.
The houses are built in sets of two single-family attached homes. Finishing touches are being put on two houses and the others are under roof with doors, window and some siding.
The renovation is an attached home to one that Traylor owns and refinished a few years ago.
Traylor lived in Church Hill 19 years ago, when it was not as safe as it is now, he said, and he has been building there for 15 years.
He defined the architectural style of these new houses as transitional craftsman with a Victorian tone. “I am not original; all these things have been done before, but I am original in combining elements from different homes.”
The first finished houses at 616 and 618 N. 31st streets are on the market for $414,950, which may seem pricey for this section of town.
Most new houses or renovations in the area sell in the $300,000 range, Jarreau said. But most new houses or renovations don’t have this level of craftsmanship, he said.
Traylor didn’t cut corners to save a few dollars. The interior doors, for instance, are solid wood. “They are $20 more,” he said. “Why not?”
He took the same approach throughout. “I stand by my work,” he said, adding that he doesn’t want homeowners to deal with problems that could arise in five or six years if inferior building materials were used.
He used double-insulated doors and windows, wide moldings, crown moldings, interior columns and carved railing posts. He built window transoms not only above the front door but also above interior doors to bring natural light into corridors.
He used recycled materials for porch flooring, so they don’t have to be redone or restained. He added storage sheds to fenced-in backyards. “People have stuff, coolers and the like.”
Most people who have looked at the houses have the same question. They want to know if they are renovations or new construction, said Nancy Kuehl, co-listing agent with Hometown Realty and Traylor’s wife. “That is the best compliment.”
Traylor said he has done about 140 full-house renovations in Richmond of structures built from the early 1800s to 1920. “I got tired of eating that dust and pulling out rotted trim.”
He wanted to build new with the same attention to detail as the old and add new features such as security systems, wireless Wi-Fi systems, wide hallways, walk-in closets and stamped concrete walkways. He put in high-end finishes such as apron sinks, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.
The attached houses have the same floor plans in reverse, but that’s where the similarities end. The furnishings and details are different. One has a dark acacia floor, the other has a light acacia floor. The floor in one half bath is herring bone Carrara marble, while the other is tile.
It would have been safer to build basic, solid houses in the $200,000 to $300,000 range, Traylor said.
But the timing felt right — with the rediscovery of Church Hill as a cool place to live and do business — to build the houses he always wanted to build, he said.
Traylor assembled the lots over the past couple of years and waited for the economy to turn.
“I couldn’t have put so much detail and money in these houses if it weren’t for what business are doing,” he said, mentioning The Hill Cafe, Dutch & Co. and Metzger Bar & Butchery.
“By concentrating my efforts, I am trying to change a block and make a change.”

Next Cedar Point coaster’s 220-foot lift hill finished

SANDUSKY, Ohio — Cedar Point has topped off its newest thrill ride, a dive coaster named Valravn, that’s set to debut next year.
Officials at the amusement park in Sandusky say the weather has helped speed up construction of the coaster, which will be the largest of its kind.
Workers finished the ride’s 220-foot-tall lift hill last week.
The coaster will have a 90-degree drop and travel at a top speed of 75 mph before going upside-down three times.

WELCOME FROM FOOT INTERNATIONAL 2016 CONGRESS ORGANIZERS IN BERLIN

Dear Colleagues,
It is our sincere pleasure to welcome you to Berlin for the first ever FOOT International Congress from June 23 to June 25, 2016.
This will be the first time that three scientific foot and ankle societies, i.e. the EFAS (European Foot and Ankle Society), DAF (German Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society) and i-FAB (International Foot and Ankle Biomechanics Society) join forces to bring together researchers, clinicians and industrial partners interested in all aspects of the foot and ankle.
FOOT International 2016 strives to provide a platform for professionals of all disciplines dealing with foot and ankle surgery and research to interact with each other for exchange of expertise and potential collaboration both, in academia and in healthcare. It is essential for surgeons (EFAS and DAF) to be up-to-date about the current knowledge in basic and applied research (i-FAB), and it is important for primary researchers (i-FAB) to keep in touch with real-life foot and ankle problems and care (EFAS and DAF). Therefore, the integration of primary research (i-FAB) and foot and ankle surgeons (EFAS and DAF) in one congress appears crucial.
It is our explicit aim to share the latest scientific and clinical findings presented by international researchers and clinicians to the foot and ankle biomechanics community. This way we hope to encourage a multi-disciplinary exchange of ideas amongst professionals from all professional backgrounds: Surgeons, Scientists, Physical therapists, Orthosis and shoe makers, and industry.
We are looking forward to meeting you in Berlin, 2016
